This week Vanessa Gilmartin and Nicky Lambert spoke with guests Aisling Culhane and Dr Nina Kilkku about Horatio. Horatio is an organisation representing psychiatric and mental health nursing organisations within Europe. In co-operation with other organisations, projects and individuals, Horatio is an active partner in discussions that influence European mental health issues with particular reference to the viewpoint of nurses. AC - Aisling Culhane General Secretary of Horatio European Psychiatric Nurses is the Research & Development Advisor to the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association Ireland (PNA). MSc Health Ethics & Law, H Dip (Mediation) BSc, (Nursing Practice Development) Registered Psychiatric Nurse, AMI Mont Teaching Dip. The Psychiatric Nurses’ Association (PNA) as a trade union and professional organisation provides leadership to promote Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing, improve health care for individuals, families, groups and communities and shape health policy for the delivery of services. As Research & Development Advisor Aisling supports the work of the PNA on behalf of its members advising on professional and employment issues and represents the PNA in a variety of areas, such as (Clinical Leadership, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Education, Health & Nursing Policy). Much of her work involves developing structural liaisons and networks with national and international bodies. Aisling has extensive experience in mental health care delivery in Ireland working in clinical practice in both adult, child and adolescent mental health, policy advice and project management throughout her 29 years nursing career. She is a Fellow (FFNMRCSI) of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery RCSI. NK - Dr Nina Kilkku, the President of European Psychiatric Nurses (Horatio). Nina works as a Principal lecturer of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Nursing in Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Finland. Besides her daily work she works as a private psychotherapist with families and couples. Nina has wide expertise on international, national, and regional collaboration with different mental health related organizations and NGOs, as well as on the editorial activities in international peer-reviewed publications. Her latest interest area, besides families and networks, is on the ecological viewpoints in relation to mental health. Nina has been awarded as a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery in Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FFNMRCSI).
